# Authority before selling: the psychology and the limits

Rhinohead Labs · Research memo · October 18, 2026

## The founder's thesis

Rhinohead should earn authority through the quality of its investigations before selling practical manuals and workbooks. It need not claim that its founder personally achieved every business outcome discussed. Its evidence should come from research, theory, comparative cases, direct course review and documented experiments. This is a defensible educational approach; the quality of each component still needs examination.

## What psychology supports

**Social proof can influence choice without establishing quality.** Salganik, Dodds and Watts' randomized artificial music-market experiment involved 14,341 participants. Making others' choices visible increased inequality and unpredictability of success. That is causal evidence in a music-choice setting, not an estimate of course conversion or proof that popular courses are poor. For Rhinohead the implication is to separate popularity, relevance and demonstrated quality. [Original research, 2006](https://www.princeton.edu/~mjs3/salganik_dodds_watts06_full.pdf).

**Credibility involves more than expertise.** Fiske and Dupree's PNAS perspective discusses expertise and trustworthiness in science communication. It supports taking perceived intent seriously alongside competence, but is not a course-sales experiment. Publishing our commercial interest, mistakes and limits is a reasonable application to test, not a guaranteed conversion tactic. [Fiske & Dupree, 2014](https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1317505111).

**Practice can strengthen learning.** Freeman and colleagues' meta-analysis of 225 undergraduate STEM studies found benefits for active learning relative to traditional lecturing. It supports building tasks and feedback into education. It does not show that entrepreneurship courses produce business profits or that any particular Rhinohead product works. [Freeman et al., 2014](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4060654/).

## What Rhinohead should do with this

Earn authority in layers: publish something readers can inspect; show source provenance and a fair comparison; let them use a tool successfully; obtain specialist review when needed; then document real reader and learner outcomes with consent. Show actual usefulness before testimonials. A beautiful page helps communication but is not evidence of research competence.

Use theory to explain a possible mechanism. Use case studies to see how it operates under specific conditions. Include contrary and unsuccessful cases to test the explanation. Use small experiments to reduce uncertainty about the next action. Define outcomes before testing and show negative findings. Triangulation can strengthen a conclusion, but several weak or dependent sources do not automatically become strong evidence.

Do not confuse proof that a founder is rich with proof that the founder can teach; or proof that someone teaches clearly with proof that the suggested business is profitable. Research expertise and execution expertise are distinct. Use appropriately qualified practitioners or reviewers when instructions depend on skills the team has not demonstrated.

## Wallace Wattles: inspiration versus substantiation

The 1910 text advocates purposeful thought, gratitude and effective action, but also makes absolute wealth claims grounded in a metaphysical account of reality. The text is evidence of Wattles' philosophy, not controlled evidence that following it makes wealth inevitable. [Original text](https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/59844/pg59844-images.html).

Keep the ambition to understand principles and act deliberately. Do not adopt the claim that failure is impossible or that poverty establishes a person's failure to think correctly. Market conditions, resources, competition, constraints and chance can affect results despite disciplined effort.

The honest sequence is **theory → evidence → case comparison → experiment → measurement → revision**. The aim is better understanding and decisions, with business results measured separately. “Experiments equal success” is too strong: an experiment can teach us that a strategy should be stopped. That can protect a reader's time and money and still be a valuable outcome.

## Public positioning

**Know More. Build Better.**

**Research-backed knowledge. Real-world strategies. The tools to build what’s next.**

We investigate how online business works, examine the evidence behind the advice, and turn what we learn into step-by-step working manuals and workbooks you can use to build, measure and improve.

Our authority should rest on what readers can examine, understand and apply. Founder wealth, follower count and borrowed institutional imagery are not substitutes for that work.

## Before selling

Complete and publish Report 001 after the founder's course-taking and evidence review. Release substantive tools. Observe whether readers can use them. Document corrections and limits. Build one narrow working manual and test whether readers can complete the build and use its outputs. If readers find it useful and delivery economics hold, introduce the paid product with exact scope and honest expectations. Authority is earned through repeated usefulness, not a title we award ourselves on launch day.
